The Grandeur of The Rockies is Overwhelming

You're missing out on one of the most special places in the
United States if you've never been to the Rockies.

We were going to Colorado for the first time to
celebrate Grandma's birthday.

I'd spent time in the Smokies of Tennessee and marveled at
the height of the tallest peak - Clingmans Dome which was
around 6,000 feet.

Nothing could have prepared me for my first visit to the
Rockies. The size of the mountains, the height of the
mountains, the starlit sky, and the solitude. I ate them
all up.

We arrived in Albequerque just before lunch on Southwest
Airlines and quickly got our rental car from Hertz and took
off toward the mountains we could see in the distance.

I quietly figured we would be at those mountains within a
hour, two hours tops and I could not wait to see the
"real" mountains of Colorado.

We drove towards the mountains for 4 long hours and we still
had not gotten to them. The further we drove, the more our
mouths hung open in awe. We finally arrived at my wife's
grandmother's house. We had just begun to learn about the
Rockies.

It was December 1, 1992 and there was a little snow on the
ground. we had worn running suits for the drive from the
airport to grandma's house. We stored our heavy coats in
the back of the truck and figured we would get them out
when we arrived.

It was December 1, 1992 and there was a little snow on the
ground. For the long drive, we had worn running suits that
were popular in the early 90s. We put our heavy coats in the
back of the truck. When we got out of the truck, grandma,
Uncle John and Aunt Laura met us before we were able to get
our heavy coats on.

About an hour later, we were still outside, still talking
when I realized I was not cold. I asked if the temperature
was around 45 degrees and John just laughed. He showed me
the thermometer and it read 15 degrees! I couldn't believe
it.

He explained to me that the low humidity made the air not
feel as cold.

Now it was dark and we were ready to go inside. Uncle John
stopped us and turned off the only light that was on...the
one the porch. It was so dark, it was scary. No light
anywhere. I put my hand right in front of my face and I
could not see it. I was amazed until I looked up...

There were so many stars in the sky. We've both lived in
West Tennessee all of our lives and when we look at the
stars, there are areas of the sky don't look like there
are any stars.

I knew that I wanted to move to Colorado someday. I had
to...I could not miss out on the beauty that is the Rocky
Mountains.

Ever since that weekend back in 1992, I have been working
hard to get my finances arranged so I can move to Colorado.

I'm not there yet, but I am Rockies Bound!
