Going to Snowboard? ~ Be Warm, Be Safe, Have Fun!

The sport of snowboarding has grown significantly during
the past few years. People choose to go snowboarding for a
lot of reasons - to try something new, to get a rush, to
stay fit, or to get away, just to name a few.

Unfortunately, we also have a bad reputation for being
unsafe to ourselves and others. We get that reputation
by failing to watch out for people and objects that
share the slopes with us, or by breaking rules that
were put in place for everyone's safety. Be considerate
and be observant so that you can be a part of changing
that reputation we have.

One of the skiiers' pet peeves is that snowboard riders
attempt runs that are way too hard which inconveniences
and often endangers those for whom a run on that
particular slope is appropriate. Know your limits, and
stay within them for a safer, more fun ride.

Avalanches are a concern to all of us who ride or ski.
Check snow reports and weather reports before hitting
the slopes. If there have been recent big swings in
temperature or a big snow that has fallen on top of snow
that has melted and refrozen several times, you might
be better off staying home.

Hypothermia and frostbite aren't cool, and they're
completely avoidable. Don't wear your skating baggies
on the slopes. Invest in some good quality Gore-Tex,
Cool-Max, and old-fashioned wool clothing. They breathe,
wick away moisture, and can keep wind and melted snow
away from your skin. Put your hat on like your mama told
you, too!

Foot care is vital! Wear proper-fitting boots that leave
some room for your toes to move inside of them. Wear socks
of material that will keep your feet warm even when wet.
Treat blisters immediately, and get off the slopes fast
if you can't feel your toes.

Protect yourself against the sun. Wear sunblock
and lip balm to protect your skin. Sunglasses or goggles
that are UV-resistant are also a must.

Save the partying for the end of the day. On the slopes,
your fun should be riding a snowboard not getting drunk
or high. If you need a drink, choose water. Anything
else is going to hinder you instead of helping.

Those of us who snowboard love a great ride! Great rides
are the result of common sense and sound preparation
as much as they are about having a great board.
